    Heat Illness Prevention

Heat kills more workers than most people realize. Recognize the early signs of heat illness — and act before it becomes an emergency.

    Back to Talks

    Key Points

    • Water. Rest. Shade. The three pillars of heat illness prevention.
    • Acclimatize new and returning workers gradually over 7–14 days.
    • Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911 immediately.

    Hazards to Watch For

    • Direct sun exposure with no shade
    • Heavy PPE trapping body heat
    • Dehydration and electrolyte loss
    • Pre-existing conditions and certain medications

    Best Practices

    • Drink water every 15–20 minutes — don't wait until you're thirsty.
    • Take rest breaks in shaded or cool areas.
    • Use the buddy system — watch each other for warning signs.
    • Know the signs: heavy sweating stops, confusion, hot/dry skin = heat stroke.

    Discussion Questions

    1. Do you know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke?
    2. When was the last time you took a real break in the shade — not just stood near it?
    3. Who on your crew is new this week? Are they acclimatized?
