PPE — The Right Gear For The Job

• PPE is the last line of defense — engineering and admin controls come first.
• Match the PPE to the hazard: ANSI Z87 for eyes, ANSI Z89 for heads, ASTM F2413 for feet.
• Damaged PPE is no PPE. Inspect it daily.

• Wrong PPE for the task (e.g., leather gloves for chemical handling)
• Expired or damaged hard hats and harnesses
• Ill-fitting respirators with broken seals
• Cross-contamination from reusing single-use PPE

• Inspect all PPE before each shift.
• Store PPE properly — out of sun, chemicals, and extreme heat.
• Replace PPE per manufacturer guidelines, not 'when it looks bad.'
• Fit-test respirators annually for every user.

1. When did you last replace your hard hat? (Most manufacturers say 5 years from manufacture date.)
2. Are your safety glasses rated for impact AND your specific task (welding, grinding, chemical)?
3. Do your gloves match the hazard — cut, chemical, electrical, vibration?
